EDUCATION DIPLOMACY

Education Diplomacy uses public diplomacy tools to promote effective cooperation across sectors and among diverse actors to solve education challenges and advance transformational agendas for education.

The nature of international relations has undergone a significant change with the emergence of non-state actors and new processes that are shaping diplomatic practices and international affairs.
In this setting, international education builds a new nature of transnational cooperation. However, the actors engaged in international education and the
functions they play in the present diplomatic processes are only beginning to receive attention of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
Education Diplomacy, although a developing and often disputed term, is the best concept for comprehending the diverse functions that knowledge, research, innovation, and education institutions play in international relations and how international relations shape these important diplomatic practices.

Our work aims to analyze the challenges faced by under-represented groups in education, science, technology, engineering, and international relations and to provide a platform to share possible solutions.

Traditional diplomatic channels often fail to address the global challenges of our time, creating opportunities for the next generation of diplomats.

Forging ahead with fresh insights and innovative strategies, education diplomats have an unparalleled potential to mould the trajectory of our world and usher in transformative change.

Institut de diplomatie publique develops programming and experiences connecting international relations and education - with a special focus on the role that non-state actors can play - in order to promote global understanding.

Role of Public Diplomacy in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals - Goal 4

SDG 4 states: “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Indeed, the Education 2030 Framework for Action acknowledged that “the ambitious education goal cannot be achieved by governments alone. They will need the support of all stakeholders, including non-state actors.” (Education 2030 Framework for Action).

Collaboration facilitated by diplomatic interactions among diverse actors at all levels will drive innovative solutions to education challenges.

2

Transcending language barriers to science, technology, engineering, and international relations through public diplomacy

The underrepresentation of non-English speakers in science, technology, engineering, and international relations has become a crisis of significant proportion.
The crisis is even more pronounced when we examine participation by language and explore how this primary identity dimension serves to marginalize non-English speakers, who make up more than 90% of the world's population.

Making this exclusion visible is the first step towards achieving fair participation for those whose first language isn’t English.

3

Converting educational non-state actors into change agents of the social, ecologic and digital transformations

This toolkit aims to support educational diplomacy practitioners from all disciplines to develop educational experiences that empower and enable underrepresented groups to become activators in the global transition.
